Learning Experience

In the beginning of the quarter I was quite skeptical about the open discussions that took place in the classroom and how open everyones thoughts were on race and gender. I was always curious what other races and genders had to think on the topic of other races and genders thoughts, and in this class I learned exactly what others were thinking. I believe that this class made me realize that other races truly do 'feel' that Caucasians have the upper hand in today's society. I have always been one to believe that everyone is equal no matter what your skin color or gender may be and this class made that belief feel true. Students opened up in ways that they would not in other classes and this includes myself. Usually I just sit back in classes and wait for others to ask the questions and in Media & Identity, if I had a question, I asked it. I thought that this class made me more open to other thoughts by races and genders. Before, I felt that I was going by the thoughts that all of my friends and family members had to say and now that I know how other races feel and think I believe it will change my outlook on the entire subject. I believe this class made me have a better outlook on life and in all honesty it was for the better. Thank you.

Online Dating

Have online dating websites changed the way that people in the world interact from each other? Have people stopped actually charming someone off their first glance due to online dating websites? I believe that they have and I do not think it is factual. I am one to believe that the “old times” are one to go off of. I like the thought that the woman I find will be a woman that I have to go out and truly search for, and not having to use the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, or, MySpace. The Internet has reformed the way that people are falling in love for good. We now have the options of entering information, being matched to a compatible person, and then meeting them somewhere. “The rest is history” as some would say, but I do not think so. These online dating websites to some could be the best things that have ever happen to them and to other could lead to some very awkward, disturbing times. Some people who use these dating website strictly use them for the reason of being connected for the right reasons and some use them for meeting others and having sexual intercourse. I enjoy the thought that I will find the love of my life in a normal setting and not using the Internet, but I guess you just never know.

Racist Comedians?

In class on Tuesday we watched several skits on different African American comedians who in my mind are absolutely hilarious human beings, but when it came to some of their comments I was not impressed. When discussing these comedians and their direct comments toward other races, several classmates found this quite funny and others did not find it funny at all. I believe the way that people take comedians is how they were raised and how open they are to racist comments by comedians. It seems that if someone comes from a more "urban" area who was possibly raised with strict rules about racism, then these racist comments by comedians are hurtful and somewhat of an annoyance to these classmates. I have always been one to look around in the classroom when racist comments are said by someone on the projector screen and it always seems like it is the same girls who take offense to these words. Why is that people of the African American descent seem that it is ok to call a Caucasian a "brother" or another word but if we use these words, it means serious business and possible fighting words? I believe if one race can use a word so often and not consider racism towards each other, then those races should understand why other races use the word in such a way that is normal to them. There are many things that need to be eliminated in the world today when it comes to racism and derogatory terms.

When in class on Tuesday I asked a question why is it ok if one race says a racist comment about the same race, then why can't Caucasians make similar racist jokes toward their race with the same word being used? I believe this is almost a double standard in the racism category because this is a country where freedom of speech is aloud. I am all about eliminating racism and the comments that come along with it.

Women's Complaints!

As we watched and discussed in class when Dave Chappelle spoke about how women come to men for all of their complaints and worries in life, it brought fourth attention many things to me. In life it always seems that men are always trying to help and kiss the feet of the women in the world. This seems odd to me because isn't the stereotype in the United States that men are the bread winners and provide the family with money and a roof over the head of women? Well as we were in class this past Tuesday it seemed to me that the professor and several female students were going along with the predicament that men were not good listeners or writers? This also seems odd to me since Aristotle and some of the most famous philosophers of all times spoke upon and documented some of the most famous sayings of all times. I was very upset when these discussions in class were being spoken of because I believe every male and every female are equal in this world. I do not believe that women have bigger brains than men and I do not believe that men have bigger brains than women! I believe that every female and every male are equal in this world.
